Preliminary Review

As we approached the preliminary task we spent a number of lessons working on different filming techniques. We based our preliminary task on a family with two teenage children fighting. This eventually leads to the mother having to step in and break it up. We chose this topic as in the argument gave us a chance to use our new camera angles.

One of these camera angles was the 180 degree rule. This means that if two characters are talking then we draw an imaginary line connecting them. This means that we cannot break this line as it will change the orientation of the characters. If we do this then the audience will become confused. In our preliminary task we used this rule when the two teenagers are arguing. We did not break the rule which is really good as it would not disorientate the audience. Although it was quite difficult to do as we kept moving the camera around the room. As well as the eighty degree rule we also used over the shoulder shot. This is commonly used to show a conversation. This also allowed us to see the emotions of the two characters as the argued. However we did use the same two over the shoulder shots and we could have made more different angles.

As we came to editing we used the programme, serif movie maker plus. We imported the clips from the camera using the usb connector. We had trouble using the SD card in the camera as the computers were not recognising that it was in the computer so we couldn’t save the files. We then put all the clips into order and edited them look good and make the scene flow. We used action matching in two different parts of the scene. When Kate opens the front door and then closes it and the same with another door a few seconds later. We were very happy with the way that these shots turned out. We also edited dialogue when the mother Is speaking. We shot two different clips of this piece of dialogue and then edited it to make it flow. We did this to achieve seamless editing. We were really happy with this piece of editing as it turned out really smooth and seamless.

We managed to film all the clips in one shooting which was really good as we got it over and done with. As the mother is my mum we managed to use her as the actress. She was at home when we decided to film so we were able to meet at home at the same time. We all arranged a time for when we needed to film. This allowed us to be on time and not waste any time.

To conclude me and my group were really happy with the editing side of the preliminary task. The camera angles that we used could have been more varied however we did use some good camera angles to show the emotion and dialogue in the scene.
