We created a questionnaire to find out what the audience would like to see and whether they have seen any gritty realism. We also asked what they think of our film idea and what they look for in a film.

My Audience
Our film idea is a single parent with 3 children at different ages. She is searching for a job and a partner and it goes through this journey. She struggles to help and support her children as she loses her job and has no income.
Out of the 4 main audiences, mainstreamers, aspirers,
succeeders and reformers we had to decide which audience we would target. We
discussed as a group and decided to target the succeeders and reformers. We
chose these two groups as they are typically people who don't always go for the
normal blockbuster films. Succeeders are people who have climbed the ladder and
are in control of what they own. Car adverts that emphasise power are targeted
at this group. Reformers are people who want to make the world a better place.
They are typically very eco-friendly. They tend to be educated professionals
such as teachers or doctors. This is an advantage for us as our film is not a
blockbuster and is not a typical storyline. On the questionnaire I produced,
one of the respondents who was a female in the range of 21-30 was very
interested in our story as it was very different. This could place her in one
of these audiences as she seems to be interested in the unique storyline. The
age range we will be aiming for is between 18-55 as single parents can be as
young as 18 and the older viewers will understand the struggles of having
children. The film will be viewable for both genders however we are aiming for
female viewers as the parent in the film will be female. This will make it more
relatable for women to understand how the character is feeling.
Blumler in 1972 came up with the four ways of satisfying an
audience through diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and
surveillance. We thought that as our film is a gritty realism it will be
relatable to real people. Therefore we chose that the best ways to satisfy the
audience would be the personal relationships and identity. The relationships in
the film will be a struggle between the parent and the children and the parent
finding a partner. The relationship between the parent and the children will be
very relatable as it is a common occurrence with single parents trying to
control 3 children will be stressful. We will try and convey this in our
opening sequence. The personal identity between the single parent and the
female audiences. Some of the viewers might be single mothers so they know the
struggles of being a single parent and will be able to relate very well to the
character.
We will be aiming for the audience to understand the message
of the film at the end (Dominant position). The majority of the people who
fully understand the film would be female mother’s form 21-55. This makes the
range go from single young mothers to middle aged parents who have experienced
bringing up children. However we believe that there will be some viewers who
live not fully understanding the meaning of the film. This could be the case if
the viewer was a 21 man with no children. He has not been through bringing up a
child with or without a partner so he will not relate to the characters as
much.
I then analysed my results from the questionnaire. I began by analysing how many people who answered my questions have seen a British film in the cinema. Out of the 5 people 4 have seen a British film. This is useful as it will indicate that my film will be watched despite being a British made film.
3 of the 5 respondents were aged 16-21 and their favourite genre of films were comedies. This tells us that most 16-21 prefer to watch comedies s they will not be interested in our gritty realism genre. This helps us narrow down the target audience age. The younger audiences for example 7 to 12 would most be interested in animations so we will not be targeting them as our audience. As well as this they might find the content very hard to relate to. There also might be some swearing involved in the film so we will probably give our film a 16+ certificate.
I then analysed the results of my survey. In total 5 people responded to my survey. One question that gave some useful responses was the film idea. I asked whether my film idea would attract people and 4/5 of the people said that they would be interested, this shows that most people would be interested in our film idea.. One person responded saying 'its not my thing but im sure movie buffs would enjoy it' this tells us that maybe only film lovers would enjoy the film. One of the respondants said that it is a film idea that you don't see very often.
